Myths

At one time or another most of us have either read or heard some of the following myths.

The first and biggest myth we hear is that Fibromyalgia isn’t a real disease and that it is

“all in our head”.

Here are just a few of them that I have read/heard;

  • Fibromyalgia is just an umbrella term.
  • Only women get fibromyalgia syndrome.
  • Fibromites should not exercise.
  • Fibromyalgia is caused by depression.
  • “My Aunt used to have Fibromyalgia but it went away”
  • There are drugs available which correct or cure the cause of fibromyalgia.
  • There is nothing that can be done to treat Fibromyalgia.
  • FILL IN THE BLANK….. is a cure for Fibromyalgia.
  • It is not possible to have a good quality of life with fibromyalgia.

It would be great if everyone with Fibromyalgia had the same symptoms, pain level  and “evil sidekicks”.

It would be even better if there was one treatment that worked for everyone exactly the same.

We struggle for such a long time to find out what is wrong with us.
Once we have a diagnosis we are so happy when we can talk to have others who might be able to make sense of some of the symptoms we are experiencing or treatments that are available. We need answers so bad that we see what treatments others have tried or what they are saying is a symptom of Fibromyalgia and we assume they are right.

I recently found myself becoming very frustrated with a large online Fibromyalgia support group.
Several recently diagnosed Fibromites were posting questions.
Other members were posting answers faster than I could refresh the Computer.

Some of the answers were accurate but a lot of them were not.

I posted my answer only after checking to be sure it was correct by looking in my Fibro Bible (Integrative Therapies for Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Myofascial Pain by Celeste Cooper and Jeffrey Miller).

As the conversation continued I became more frustrated.  They were leading the new Fibromites in the wrong direction.

Where in the heck was the ADMINISTRATION for this group?

I finally replied that I thought that there was a lot of misinformation being posted and referred them to a posting that I knew they would find the correct information.

I try to always remind people who Fibromyalgia is not a “cookie cutter” disease and not everything that works for one of us will work for someone else. Heck, I can’t guarantee if I do something I will or will not go into a flare and I certainly can’t always guarantee that the treatments that I have found work for me to be able to keep my illnesses manageable.

We have seen so much new information brought to light in the past 12 months and I know that this year will bring even more actual FACTS.

I don’t even pretend to know as much as I should about all of my illnesses – Fibro especially. However, I have found people who are credible sources and I rely on their teachings. I try to share that information on the Fibro Warriors facebook page and through the blog.
